Information Economics Workshop by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar Principal Scientist, Software & Analytics, GE John F Welch Technology Centre, Bangalore. 19th and 20th March, 2012
March 19, 2012 - March 20, 2012
International School of information Management (ISiM) is organising a Workshop on “Information Economics” by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar, Principal Scientist, Software & Analytics, GE John F Welch Technology Centre, Bangalore, on 19th and 20th March, 2012 @ International School of information Management (ISiM), Manasagangotri, Mysore.
Information economics is a field that studies how information affects an economy and economic decisions. The special characteristics of information (as compared with other types of goods) complicate many standard economic theories.
In recent decades, there have been influential advances in the study of information asymmetries and their implications for contract theory, including market failure as a possibility. Experimental and game theory methods have been developed to model and test theories of information economics, including potential public-policy applications such as mechanism design to elicit information-sharing and otherwise welfare-enhancing behavior.
This Workshop on Information economics–the study of situations in which different economic agents have access to different information, introduces the participants to the effect of asymmetric information on the efficiency properties of market outcomes and the kind of institutions and patterns of behavior that develop in response to informational asymmetries. The Workshop covers topics such as: Asymmetric Information; Game theoretic Approaches; and Auctions. The focus is on game theoretical tools required for analyzing situations of asymmetric information and applications in risk sharing, moral hazard, adverse selection (signaling, screening), and mechanism design. The workshop will introduce students to applications of the theory-applied fields in economics such as auctions, finance, environmental economics, etc.
Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar is currently Principal Scientist, Software Sciences and Analytics, in GE Global Research and is based in the GE John F Welch Technology Center in Bangalore. In this role, Abhinanda works with GE research and engineering teams as they design software and solutions built around data mining, modeling, and optimization. He is also Manager of the Edison Engineering Development Program for high-potential engineering talent. Earlier in GE, Abhinanda has served as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has led and contributed to services technologies for GE Energy and GE Capital focused mostly on risk management and reliability. In a research career with GE, IBM, and MIT, Abhinanda’s publications and patents have been in applying statistical and probabilistic methods to areas such as wind energy forecasting, bond market analytics, biomedical text mining, content-based image retrieval, wireless network interference, gravitational wave detection, etc.
Dr.Sarkar received his B. Stat and M. Stat degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and his PhD in Statistics (with a minor in Economics) from Stanford University, USA. He taught Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, for several years while pursuing research interests in time-frequency methods in stock prices and mutual fund ranking dynamics. He has also been visiting faculty at Stanford and ISI. While at IBM Research, he received invention achievement awards for his work on pricing of e-commerce services.
