In late 2009, the International School of Information Management, University of Mysore, in collaboration with Knowledge Dialogues, Hong Kong, embarked on a journey that enables us to work towards positioning Mysore as a Knowledge City.
A Knowledge City is one, which nurtures knowledge, possesses an economy that is knowledge based, provides an environment that fosters knowledge creation and dissemination. A knowledge city instills a sense of ownership and attachment in the minds of people as it actively involves them in the developmental activities and allows for public articulation of thoughts and criticisms. In other words, the citizens of the city become active stakeholders in its development.
As the notion of knowledge based development gains momentum in the West, there seems to be a compelling need for developing a framework that can contribute towards managing knowledge at the city level in the Indian context, which can also be applied to other developing societies. Mysore, being the cultural capital of Karnataka and an education hub, was a natural choice. This marked the commencement of the project NavaMysuru, meaning “new” Mysore that aims at positioning Mysore as a Knowledge City.
