SUMMARY:ISiM Workshop on Intelligence & Security Informatics June 17-19\, 2010
DESCRIPTION:Combating terrorism has occupied centre-stage across governments\, security agencies\, policy makers\, academia\, industry and society at large for obvious and understandable reasons. In the academic and industry circles\, past decade has witnessed significant interest in security-related research in a wide range of applications spanning across national and international security\, economic and societal security\, and including personal and community security. Academic disciplines especially centered on Information Technologies such as information and computer sciences\, information systems\, human-computer studies\, technology adoption\, and policy studies have made rapid progress in developing and evaluating customized frameworks\, methodologies\, techniques\, and systems to meet specific information processing and knowledge management challenges of “security” and “Intelligence”. An emerging field of cross-disciplinary study\, called the Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI)\, encompassing these efforts through an integrated technological\, organizational\, and policy-based approach has evolved. This multidiscipline is shaped by research and applications in fields from data/text/web mining to knowledge management to cognitive science to social psychology. The emergent field also has spawned professional societies and conferences\, to build a professional community – \nThis emergent field has good prospects for and demands best of the young minds to expand and strengthen the domain and help contribute to the end goal of Secure and Smart society. The Workshop would help achieve this goal. \n \nFigure 1. Research framework for ISI from H. Chen\, “Intelligence and Security Informatics for International Security: Information Sharing and Data Mining\,” Springer\, 2006. \nThis workshop on ISI 2010 will provide a learning platform for students and professionals\, who focus on ISI research. We believe that this summer school will enrich the understanding of the emerging domain of ISI. \nThe Three day Workshop will have one talk and three Tutorials: \nTalk: Competitive Intelligence and Business Strategies by Dr. R.N. Prasad\, Senior Lead Principal. Education and Learning Division\, Infosys Technologies\, Mysore. \nTopics covered include:\n\nPrinciples and Practice of CI\nMarket threats\, changes and new opportunities and trends.\nCI categories: Strategic\, tactical\, adhoc and continuous.\nCI Vs. BI\nCI tools\nMetrics and best practices\nWeb Analytics and methods\n\nTutorial 1: Stream Data Mining and Its Applications in security informatics by Dr. Bhavani Thuraisingham\, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Cyber Security Research Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Texas at Dallas. \nAbstract :\nData streams are continuous flows of data. Examples of data streams include network traffic\, sensor data; call center records and so on. Their sheer volume and speed pose a great challenge for the data mining community to mine them. Data streams demonstrate several unique properties: infinite length\, concept-drift\, concept evolution and limited labeled data. Concept-drift occurs in data streams when the underlying concept of data changes over time. Concept-evolution occurs when new classes evolve in streams. Data streams may also suffer from scarcity of labeled data since it is not possible to manually label all the data points in the stream. This tutorial will present an organized picture on how to handle various data mining techniques: in particular\, how to handle classification problem in stream domain\, and how to handle clustering in evolving streams. \nDuring this tutorial we also present how the aforementioned properties are addressed for handling the data mining techniques. \nTutorial Outline:\nWe will introduce stream mining with examples\, and present its characteristics and challenges and current state of the art\, and its application to security. \n\nIntroduction\,\nData mining applications for security\,\nSuspicious event detection\,\nFace detection\nWeb page prediction\nBuilding a classification model using scarcely labeled training data based on semi-supervised clustering and active learning.\nTechniques that address all four major challenges to data stream classification: infinite length\, concept-drift\, concept-evolution\, and limited labeled data.\nClassification techniques for evolving data streams (i.e.\, feature set changing along with concept evolution) focusing on textual stream.\nClustering techniques for evolving data stream.\nApplications of stream mining in various domains including\nCurrent state of the art of data intensive stream mining using cloud computing\, namely\, Hadoop.\n\nTutorial 2: Machine Learning Techniques for Crime Data Analysis by Dr. Michael Chau\, Assistant Professor\, The University of Hong Kong. \n\nIntroduction to Machine Learning\nTypes of Learning\nMachine Learning Techniques\nDecision Trees\nProbabilistic Models\nNeural Networks\nApplications in Crime Data Analysis\nNetwork Analysis and Visualization\nTextual Analysis\nHands on with WEKA\n\n\n\n \nFaculty:\n\nDr. R.N.Prasad\, Senior Lead Principal\, Education & Research — Infosys Technologies Ltd.\, Mysore & his Team.\nDr. Bhavani Thuraisingham\,  Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Cyber Security Research Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Texas at Dallas.\nDr. Michael Chau \,Assistant Professor\,The University of Hong Kong.\n\nURL:  http://www.business.hku.hk/~mchau/ \nWorkshop Chair: \n     Shalini R. SUMMARY:Akshara Foundation\, April 26\, 2010
DESCRIPTION:The delegates from Akshara Foundation\, Bangalore visited ISiM on the 26 Apr 2010 to explore the opportunities of working together on areas of common interest. \nAkshara Foundation is a Bangalore-based Public Charitable Trust with the mission to ensure that every child is in school and learning well. Established in the year 2000\, the foundation has a range of programmes that provide multiple solutions for universalizing elementary education. The organization was set up primarily to improve learning outcomes among primary school children in all government schools in Karnataka. \nThe event started at 4PM with Prof. Shalini R. Urs\, Executive Director\, ISiM introducing the four guests – Mr. Gautam\, Mr. Alok\, Ms. Shivangi and Ms. Tara to the audience. Mr. Gautam then addressed the gathering and spoke about the vision and the operating model of their organization. He told that the vision of the organization was to improve the quotient of ‘functional literacy’ among the students of government schools. As a part of the vision\, it was necessary to continuously monitor the capability of the students over a period of time. This huge amount of data would the need to be analysed to draw meaningful inferences. He encouraged the students pursuing ‘M.Tech in Information Systems and Management’ to take up some of the technical problems related to ‘Data Analytics’ as an internship project and help them solve it. He further opined that this way\, students could simultaneously learn and contribute towards a noble cause. \nDownload the presentation slides

SUMMARY:SNA workshop\, April 7-9\, 2010; Faculty – Prof. Kevin Crowston.
DESCRIPTION:Curtain comes down to the 3 day workshop on ‘Social Network Analysis (SNA)’. We thank the speaker and the participants for making it a grand success. \nDownload Workshop Brochure \nContext and relevance\nSocial network analysis as a field of study is growing rapidly and in popularity. It is now evolving into a new paradigm across academia\, business\, industry\, popular culture and folklore. It is both an approach and a tool to uncover and understand the hidden side of connections that drive certain phenomenon involving a network of human players. SNA is the technique of mapping and monitoring the relationships and flow of information/knowledge between individuals\, teams\, organizations\, electronic devices\, URLs and other interconnected entities. With the success of social networking tools like Facebook\, Twitter\, Myspace and Orkut with the masses\, their influence on the group behavior and opinions are being increasingly felt every day. SNA has gained currency as an effective tool to study those invisible paths or lines that show the ties or links between people\, organizations and phenomena themselves. It has been deployed to uncover and visualize hidden patterns in as diverse groups as academic communities to terrorists communities; as diverse phenomenon as correlating performance and creativity to who will be the next US president. SNA is since being perceived from being a suggestive metaphor to an analytic approach to a paradigm\, with its own theoretical statements\, methods\, social network analysis software\, and researchers. \nWorkshop Objective\nIntroduce the audience to the goals and perspectives of network analysis. \n\nUnderstanding of network data and issues related to collection\, validity\, visualization and mathematical/computer representation.\nMethods of detection and description of structural properties such as centrality\, cohesion\, subgroups\, cores\, roles etc.\nAt the end of the course\, the participants will be\,\nAble to examine data in ‘social networks way’\nIdentify and formulate network analysis problems\nSolve them using network analysis software and\nInterpret the obtained results.\nThe course will be blend of lectures and lab sessions.\n\nAbout the Faculty:\n \nProf. Kevin Crowston is a Professor of Information Studies at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies since 1996. He received his A.B. (1984) in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science) from Harvard University and a Ph.D. (1991) in Information Technologies from the Sloan School of Management\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His current research interests include: empirical studies of coordination-intensive processes in human organizations; theoretical characterizations of coordination problems and alternative methods for managing them; and design and empirical evaluation of new kinds of computer systems to support people working together. A specific example of the final interest is the application of document genre to the World-Wide Web. \nSoftware tool used for analysis:\n Pajek – Program for Large Network Analysis (read more…) \n  \nWho should attend?\nHealthcare Professionals \nSocial network analysis has been used in epidemiology to help understand how patterns of human contact aid or inhibit the spread of diseases such as HIV in a population. \nInformation Managers \nThe evolution of social networks can sometimes be modeled by the use of agent based models\, providing insight into the interplay between communication rules\, rumor spreading and social structure. \nAdministrative Agencies \nSNA can also be an effective tool for mass surveillance – for example the analysis of social networks to determine whether or not a particular individual has criminal tendencies. \nInnovators/Change Managers \nDiffusion of innovations theory explores social networks and their role in influencing the spread of new ideas and practices. Change agents and opinion leaders often play major roles in spurring the adoption of innovations\, although factors inherent to the innovations also play a role. \nBrand Managers \nIt has been widely accepted that the social networking sites have tremendous influence on forming opinions about products/brand.
