SUMMARY:Special Lecture (18) Industrial Internet by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar\, Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore.
DESCRIPTION:International School of information Management (ISiM) organised a Special Lecture (18) on “Industrial Internet” by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar\, Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore\, on 15th December\, 2011 at 11:00 am @ International School of information Management (ISiM)\, Manasagangotri\, Mysore. \nBrief Report:\nDr.Abhinanda Sarkar addressing students at International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, in the course of his Special Lecture on “Industrial Internet” said connecting communication devices and other gadgets that are used for domestic and manufacturing purposes\, would bring in revolutionary changes is the way things have been working so far. He said connecting the service industry\, advertising\, supply chain\, internet and almost all industries on a single platform can be beneficial to consumers as well as serve business interests. He talked about how a service engineer for your washing machine company could show up at your door step and say “Your washing machine called me up” and I am here to service. This would enhance safety and improve efficiency.\nDrawing an analogy\, Dr.Sarkar said industrial internet is Facebook for jet engines\, real-time status updates that help aircraft technicians maintain the log chart with more precision\, thus delivering better service to passengers ensuring care traffic control\, which reduces waiting times and fastens passenger movement a lot than before. Today it is possible to get real time flight data including the condition of the different components of the aeroplane to monitor the flight details and help diagnose problems if any.\nHis talk was full of examples from diverse domains including Health care\, vehicular traffic management & safety and others. \nWhile the Internet in the last 20 years has connected the entire world by connecting the communication devices such as the computers\, mobiles and others\, the Industrial Internet is about the next stage of Internet. The Industrial Internet is all about connecting millions of the machines that help to move\, cure\, power and build the world we live in. The Industrial Internet is Facebook for jet engines: real-time status updates that help aircraft technician’s do maintenance more efficiently\, which keeps passengers on the move. Its “care traffic control:” algorithms that smooth operations in ERs so patient wait times are shorter. And its rail Movement Planner: software that crunches data from locomotives on the move to increase average network speed by 2 to 4 miles per hour\, which saves approximately $200 million in capital and expenses per year. The Industrial Internet is all of these innovative solutions and so many more\, saving customers money and connecting our world. GE’s software engineers are working on developing and more from a B to B perspective\, on “Industrial Internet” to make our lives much better by connecting various machines that are part of our daily lives. \nSpeaker Bio:\n \nDr.Abhinanda Sarkar is currently Principal Scientist\, Software Sciences and Analytics\, in GE Global Research and is based in the GE John F Welch Technology Center in Bangalore. In this role\, Abhinanda works with GE research and engineering teams as they design software and solutions built around data mining\, modeling\, and optimization. He is also Manager of the Edison Engineering Development Program for high-potential engineering talent. Earlier in GE\, Abhinanda has served as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has led and contributed to services technologies for GE Energy and GE Capital focused mostly on risk management and reliability. In a research career with GE\, IBM\, and MIT\, Abhinanda’s publications and patents have been in applying statistical and probabilistic methods to areas such as wind energy forecasting\, bond market analytics\, biomedical text mining\, content-based image retrieval\, wireless network interference\, gravitational wave detection\, etc. \nDr.Sarkar received his B. Stat and M. Stat degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and his PhD in Statistics (with a minor in Economics) from Stanford University\, USA. He taught Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, USA\, for several years while pursuing research interests in time-frequency methods in stock prices and mutual fund ranking dynamics. He has also been visiting faculty at Stanford and ISI. While at IBM Research\, he received invention achievement awards for his work on pricing of e-commerce services.

SUMMARY:Special Lecture (17) Individual Differences in Phishing Susceptibility: An Integrated Information Processing Model by Dr. Arun Vishwanath\, Director of Graduate Studies\, Associate Professor\, Department of Communication\, Adjunct Associate Professor\, Management Science & Systems\, State University of New York at Buffalo\, USA.
DESCRIPTION:Special Lecture Abstract:\nDr. Arun Vishwanath besides explaining the nuances of Phishing also presented an integrated information processing model related to phishing susceptibility. In the light of his extensive research work on the topic\, he helped the audience understand the different methods\, approaches that can be used to mitigate the damage phishing can cause. Based on his research he presented an integrated information processing model of phishing susceptibility grounded in prior research in information processing and interpersonal deception. The model is refined and validated on a sample of intended victims of an actual phishing attack. The data provides strong support for the model’s theoretical structure and causative sequence\, explaining close to fifty percent of the variance in individual phishing susceptibility. The results indicate that most phishing emails are peripherally processed and individuals make decisions based on simple cues embedded in the email. Interestingly\, urgency cues in the email stimulated increased information processing thereby short circuiting the resources available for attending to other cues that could potentially help detect the deception. \nThe findings of the phishing study suggest that habitual patterns of media use combined with high levels of email load have a strong and significant influence on individuals’ likelihood to be phished. Consistent with social cognitive theory\, computer self-efficacy was found to significantly influence elaboration\, but its influence was mitigated by domain specific-knowledge. The presentation covers the model\, its tests\, the findings of the study\, as well as the ways in which individuals can reduce their susceptibility to phishing based deception. \nHaving given an overview of the study carried out in the US context\, he also asked the participating students to leverage and extend similar study in the Indian context. \nSpeaker Profile:\nArun Vishwanath\, Ph.D.\, MBA\, is Associate Professor of Communication and the Director of the Graduate Program at the University at Buffalo. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Management Science & Systems. His research focuses on cognitive\, affective\, and behavioural consequences of information on technology adopting units ranging from individual consumers and households to cultures and health care organizations. His research takes a systems theoretic approach and focuses on the dynamic\, embedded nature of decision-making within interdependent system domains and the role of information in shaping the present and future states of such systems.

SUMMARY:Special Lecture (16) : User Experience Design for Enterprise Software By Dr. Todd Barlow Director of Usability and User Interface Design\, USA
DESCRIPTION:The talk on “User Experience Design for enterprise software By Dr. Todd Barlow of SAS began with an welcome and introduction note by Prof. Shalini Urs\, Executive Director of the International School of Information Management ( ISiM)\, University of Mysore. There was very good response with many professionals from Infosys and other industries also participating in addition to the students of ISIM and the campus. \nDr. Barlow with his more than 2 decades of expertise in Interface design began his talk by focusing on the challenges and complexity of design issues in our every day devices such as faucets to Mobile phones. Starting from giving a all encompassing definition of UI (User Interface) Design\, he went about elaborating on the relevance of US across the different functions of a company from Sales to customer support services. Given that the criterion of success for Enterprise Software is sales\, and is sold to very large organizations\, and the purchase decisions are made by a higher level decision maker in the company and the feedback is from the end user\, it is a tough challenge to meet all expectations. Most UI Technologies such as Flex\, WPF\, JSF\, JQuery\, iOS are missing in functionality necessary for Enterprise Software\, every enterprise software company needs a UI team in the development process. In his talk Dr. Barlow highlighted the fact that UI team is invariably a very multidisciplinary one with people from computer science to psychology being part of the team.\nThe talk highlighted on the issues of deployment of field personnel as proxies in the usability evaluation and the role of usability experts and domain experts in carrying out usability evaluation. Drawing examples of case studies of Usability inspection of mobile application for : Medical personnel in a hospital ; Parking officers ; Political advisors and others\, the challenges of managing diverse applications and different expectations \, Dr. Barlow engaged the audience in thinking about usability. He also showcased many examples of intentionally bad UI designs such as in case of “Craigslist” and “Ryanair”. The talk also covered the area of diagrammatically opposite reviews of the same product and gave excerpts of the reviews for UI of Microsoft Mobile Phones. \nDr. Barlow also talked about the kinds of problems his UI team at SAS chooses to solve for their customers. They involve complex analytics\, large amounts of data\, large numbers of users\, or some combination of those three and about how usability fits into product development that follows the pattern of the S curve where in the number of users increase with time\, and with more users how they have to be more concerned with the quality of the user experience. The majority of these users are less interested in how something works. They will trust SAS software to deliver valid\, useful information and they simply want the software to work with as little fuss as possible. Dr. Barlow concluded by summarizing how presentation is the key and successful presentation layer has to be Aesthetically pleasing; Appropriate for the Audience for enterprise software\, the Technology\, and the Brand; should be Functional including legibility and accessibility .With the emergence of Software as Service (SAAS) paradigm and the agile approach to software design becoming well accepted\, and games and mobiles becoming the most popular. UI design field has some new challenges to confront. \nSpeaker Profile:\nTodd Barlow is Director of Usability and User Interface Design at SAS. He is responsible for the usability of SAS software\, establishing usability engineering practices\, and defining the role of usability in development processes. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in human-computer interaction. Prior to working at SAS\, he worked as a consultant designing and evaluating interfaces for consumer electronics\, weapon systems\, and telecommunication software. He holds a B.S.I.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology\, a B.A. from the University of Maryland\, an M.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, and a Ph.D. in psychology from North Carolina State University.

SUMMARY:First Graduation Day Celebrations @ ISiM
DESCRIPTION:The International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore\, celebrated its first “Graduation Day”\, on Monday\, the 11th of April\, 2011. \nExecutive Director of ISiM\, Prof. Shalini R. Urs\, welcomed the gathering\, and rightfully pointed out that Graduation Day represents a transformation in the lives of the graduates\, who now step into much greater responsibilities in life. \nDr. P. Anandan\, Managing Director\, Microsoft Research India\, Bangalore\, was the commencement speaker. In his speech\, he highlighted the various kinds of transformation that we\, Indians\, have seen over the ages\, and that the only reason why we keep innovating\, is that we don’t stop aspiring. He stressed upon the fact that we should always aspire to greater heights\, and work hard towards achieving them. His main advice to the graduates was that aspirations should be the driving force in their lives\, and that they should not be limited by success. \nAlso speaking on the occasion was the Chief Guest for the ceremony\, Shri M. N. Vidyashankar\, Principal Secretary\, e-Governance\, IT\, BT and ST\, Government of Karnataka\, who rightfully said that constant innovation is the only way for organizations to sustain in the current global scenario. He also said that one of the main hurdles in the path of constant innovation was the non-acceptance of technology by members of the general public. Shri Vidyashankar highlighted an example each for the success of using technology at their department and for the failure of an innovative education system due to the non-acceptance of technology. He also threw light on the fact that though Indians have significantly contributed to the research and innovation successes at Silicon Valley (California)\, they have not played such a major role in research activities in India\, and advised the students to work towards a career of innovation. \nVice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore\, Prof. V. G. Talawar\, also addressed the gathering\, and supported the remarks made by the other dignitaries\, and advised the graduates and the students present to choose a path of wisdom and innovation. \nThe dignitaries distributed the degree certificates to the graduates. SUMMARY:Special Lecture (14) on: Open Video Project : Research and Practice By Mr. Gary Marchionini\, PhD School of Information and Library Science Chapel Hill\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gary Marchionini is Dean and Cary C. Boshamer Professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina where he serves as Dean of the school. He formerly taught courses in human-information interaction\, interface design and testing\, and digital libraries. He heads the Interaction Design Laboratory at SILS. His research areas include Information interaction\, human-computer interaction\, human-centred computing\, information retrieval\, digital libraries\, information architecture\, digital government\, cyberspace identity\, information policy. \nHe delivered a lecture at the International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore\, Mysore\, about the Open Video Project\, whose purpose is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video\, multimedia retrieval\, digital library\, and other research communities. Prof. Gary Marchionini described digital video as “crafted expression”\, which has certain emotional characteristics associated with it when a person records it. He highlighted the fact that the main objective of this project was to make the files available\, and not streams. The reason for this was that files can be reused\, where as streams can’t. However\, he also mentioned about certain tools that were in the recent times available\, which allowed the conversion of a video stream into a file that can be downloaded. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems\, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation\, summarization\, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. The availability of a common “open” video repository across the world for researchers means that it will serve as a test collection that enables systems to be compared\, in a manner similar to standard corpuses for text retrieval. \nThe Open Video Project is sponsored by and developed at the Interaction design laboratory at the School of Information and Library Sciences\, University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill. Prof. Gary Marchionini is the supervisor of the project. This project began in 1998\, with development of a basic framework and digitization of video content\, which were contributed by some organizations such as NASA and by other universities such as Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The first phase of the project was mainly about coding the video files with Metadata\, and making them available online for the researchers. \nMore information about the project can be obtained at: http://www.open-video.org/ \nProf. Shalini R. Urs\, the Executive Director of ISiM\, welcomed the gathering and also delivered the vote of thanks.

SUMMARY:ISiM Workshop on Intelligence & Security Informatics June 17-19\, 2010
DESCRIPTION:Combating terrorism has occupied centre-stage across governments\, security agencies\, policy makers\, academia\, industry and society at large for obvious and understandable reasons. In the academic and industry circles\, past decade has witnessed significant interest in security-related research in a wide range of applications spanning across national and international security\, economic and societal security\, and including personal and community security. Academic disciplines especially centered on Information Technologies such as information and computer sciences\, information systems\, human-computer studies\, technology adoption\, and policy studies have made rapid progress in developing and evaluating customized frameworks\, methodologies\, techniques\, and systems to meet specific information processing and knowledge management challenges of “security” and “Intelligence”. An emerging field of cross-disciplinary study\, called the Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI)\, encompassing these efforts through an integrated technological\, organizational\, and policy-based approach has evolved. This multidiscipline is shaped by research and applications in fields from data/text/web mining to knowledge management to cognitive science to social psychology. The emergent field also has spawned professional societies and conferences\, to build a professional community – \nThis emergent field has good prospects for and demands best of the young minds to expand and strengthen the domain and help contribute to the end goal of Secure and Smart society. The Workshop would help achieve this goal. \n \nFigure 1. Research framework for ISI from H. Chen\, “Intelligence and Security Informatics for International Security: Information Sharing and Data Mining\,” Springer\, 2006. \nThis workshop on ISI 2010 will provide a learning platform for students and professionals\, who focus on ISI research. We believe that this summer school will enrich the understanding of the emerging domain of ISI. \nThe Three day Workshop will have one talk and three Tutorials: \nTalk: Competitive Intelligence and Business Strategies by Dr. R.N. Prasad\, Senior Lead Principal. Education and Learning Division\, Infosys Technologies\, Mysore. \nTopics covered include:\n\nPrinciples and Practice of CI\nMarket threats\, changes and new opportunities and trends.\nCI categories: Strategic\, tactical\, adhoc and continuous.\nCI Vs. BI\nCI tools\nMetrics and best practices\nWeb Analytics and methods\n\nTutorial 1: Stream Data Mining and Its Applications in security informatics by Dr. Bhavani Thuraisingham\, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Cyber Security Research Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Texas at Dallas. \nAbstract :\nData streams are continuous flows of data. Examples of data streams include network traffic\, sensor data; call center records and so on. Their sheer volume and speed pose a great challenge for the data mining community to mine them. Data streams demonstrate several unique properties: infinite length\, concept-drift\, concept evolution and limited labeled data. Concept-drift occurs in data streams when the underlying concept of data changes over time. Concept-evolution occurs when new classes evolve in streams. Data streams may also suffer from scarcity of labeled data since it is not possible to manually label all the data points in the stream. This tutorial will present an organized picture on how to handle various data mining techniques: in particular\, how to handle classification problem in stream domain\, and how to handle clustering in evolving streams. \nDuring this tutorial we also present how the aforementioned properties are addressed for handling the data mining techniques. \nTutorial Outline:\nWe will introduce stream mining with examples\, and present its characteristics and challenges and current state of the art\, and its application to security. \n\nIntroduction\,\nData mining applications for security\,\nSuspicious event detection\,\nFace detection\nWeb page prediction\nBuilding a classification model using scarcely labeled training data based on semi-supervised clustering and active learning.\nTechniques that address all four major challenges to data stream classification: infinite length\, concept-drift\, concept-evolution\, and limited labeled data.\nClassification techniques for evolving data streams (i.e.\, feature set changing along with concept evolution) focusing on textual stream.\nClustering techniques for evolving data stream.\nApplications of stream mining in various domains including\nCurrent state of the art of data intensive stream mining using cloud computing\, namely\, Hadoop.\n\nTutorial 2: Machine Learning Techniques for Crime Data Analysis by Dr. Michael Chau\, Assistant Professor\, The University of Hong Kong. \n\nIntroduction to Machine Learning\nTypes of Learning\nMachine Learning Techniques\nDecision Trees\nProbabilistic Models\nNeural Networks\nApplications in Crime Data Analysis\nNetwork Analysis and Visualization\nTextual Analysis\nHands on with WEKA\n\n\n\n \nFaculty:\n\nDr. R.N.Prasad\, Senior Lead Principal\, Education & Research — Infosys Technologies Ltd.\, Mysore & his Team.\nDr. Bhavani Thuraisingham\,  Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Cyber Security Research Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Texas at Dallas.\nDr. Michael Chau \,Assistant Professor\,The University of Hong Kong.\n\nURL:  http://www.business.hku.hk/~mchau/ \nWorkshop Chair: \n     Shalini R. SUMMARY:Akshara Foundation\, April 26\, 2010
DESCRIPTION:The delegates from Akshara Foundation\, Bangalore visited ISiM on the 26 Apr 2010 to explore the opportunities of working together on areas of common interest. \nAkshara Foundation is a Bangalore-based Public Charitable Trust with the mission to ensure that every child is in school and learning well. Established in the year 2000\, the foundation has a range of programmes that provide multiple solutions for universalizing elementary education. The organization was set up primarily to improve learning outcomes among primary school children in all government schools in Karnataka. \nThe event started at 4PM with Prof. Shalini R. Urs\, Executive Director\, ISiM introducing the four guests – Mr. Gautam\, Mr. Alok\, Ms. Shivangi and Ms. Tara to the audience. Mr. Gautam then addressed the gathering and spoke about the vision and the operating model of their organization. He told that the vision of the organization was to improve the quotient of ‘functional literacy’ among the students of government schools. As a part of the vision\, it was necessary to continuously monitor the capability of the students over a period of time. This huge amount of data would the need to be analysed to draw meaningful inferences. He encouraged the students pursuing ‘M.Tech in Information Systems and Management’ to take up some of the technical problems related to ‘Data Analytics’ as an internship project and help them solve it. He further opined that this way\, students could simultaneously learn and contribute towards a noble cause. \nDownload the presentation slides

SUMMARY:SNA workshop\, April 7-9\, 2010; Faculty – Prof. Kevin Crowston.
DESCRIPTION:Curtain comes down to the 3 day workshop on ‘Social Network Analysis (SNA)’. We thank the speaker and the participants for making it a grand success. \nDownload Workshop Brochure \nContext and relevance\nSocial network analysis as a field of study is growing rapidly and in popularity. It is now evolving into a new paradigm across academia\, business\, industry\, popular culture and folklore. It is both an approach and a tool to uncover and understand the hidden side of connections that drive certain phenomenon involving a network of human players. SNA is the technique of mapping and monitoring the relationships and flow of information/knowledge between individuals\, teams\, organizations\, electronic devices\, URLs and other interconnected entities. With the success of social networking tools like Facebook\, Twitter\, Myspace and Orkut with the masses\, their influence on the group behavior and opinions are being increasingly felt every day. SNA has gained currency as an effective tool to study those invisible paths or lines that show the ties or links between people\, organizations and phenomena themselves. It has been deployed to uncover and visualize hidden patterns in as diverse groups as academic communities to terrorists communities; as diverse phenomenon as correlating performance and creativity to who will be the next US president. SNA is since being perceived from being a suggestive metaphor to an analytic approach to a paradigm\, with its own theoretical statements\, methods\, social network analysis software\, and researchers. \nWorkshop Objective\nIntroduce the audience to the goals and perspectives of network analysis. \n\nUnderstanding of network data and issues related to collection\, validity\, visualization and mathematical/computer representation.\nMethods of detection and description of structural properties such as centrality\, cohesion\, subgroups\, cores\, roles etc.\nAt the end of the course\, the participants will be\,\nAble to examine data in ‘social networks way’\nIdentify and formulate network analysis problems\nSolve them using network analysis software and\nInterpret the obtained results.\nThe course will be blend of lectures and lab sessions.\n\nAbout the Faculty:\n \nProf. Kevin Crowston is a Professor of Information Studies at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies since 1996. He received his A.B. (1984) in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science) from Harvard University and a Ph.D. (1991) in Information Technologies from the Sloan School of Management\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His current research interests include: empirical studies of coordination-intensive processes in human organizations; theoretical characterizations of coordination problems and alternative methods for managing them; and design and empirical evaluation of new kinds of computer systems to support people working together. A specific example of the final interest is the application of document genre to the World-Wide Web. \nSoftware tool used for analysis:\n Pajek – Program for Large Network Analysis (read more…) \n  \nWho should attend?\nHealthcare Professionals \nSocial network analysis has been used in epidemiology to help understand how patterns of human contact aid or inhibit the spread of diseases such as HIV in a population. \nInformation Managers \nThe evolution of social networks can sometimes be modeled by the use of agent based models\, providing insight into the interplay between communication rules\, rumor spreading and social structure. \nAdministrative Agencies \nSNA can also be an effective tool for mass surveillance – for example the analysis of social networks to determine whether or not a particular individual has criminal tendencies. \nInnovators/Change Managers \nDiffusion of innovations theory explores social networks and their role in influencing the spread of new ideas and practices.
