SUMMARY:ISiM Graduation Day 2012
DESCRIPTION:Chief Guest \nProf. H.A.Ranganath\nDirector\, National Assessment and Accreditation Council\, Bangalore \nCommencement Address \nProf. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy\nVice Chancellor\nUniversity of Hyderabad\, Hyderabad \nPresided by \nProf.V.G.Talawar\nVice Chancellor\nUniversity of Mysore\, Mysore \nReport:\nThe distinguished personas were welcomed by ISiM’s Executive-Director Dr. Shalini Urs. The ceremony was attended by ISiM students\, parents and friends of the graduates\, and guests of ISiM. \nProf. Shalini Urs greeted the graduates\, dignitaries\, and audience and introduced Dr. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy\, Dr. H. A. Ranganath and Dr. V. G. Talwar to the gathering\, highlighting their academic accomplishments and laurels\, as well as their journey to the distinguished offices they presently hold. Ms. Punyashree then called on Dr. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy\, Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad\, to deliver the Commencement Address. \nCommencement Address by Dr. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy:\nDr. Ramaswamy’s address was intellectual and inspiring. He began by reflecting on his experiences with ISiM throughout the years – from the birth of the institution to the present – and how he “learned to appreciate the prescience of the vision of Prof. Urs that led to the establishment of the institution\, its increasing need and its value in the contemporary world”. He expressed the overarching importance of information in today’s world\, and stressed that effective management of this information is especially critical for the future. \nAddressing the students directly\, he said\, “one of the biggest challenges that you Face is that the information that you need is often not available in the form that you need it in… the paucity and unreliability of data – is an issue of considerable importance” He expressed his wish that ISiM students be creators of manageable information. He stated that “as a nation\, we are poor archivists…this is one reason why we have such a poor sense of history – when you do not archive\, you have no records to remind you of what was done and why.” He explained that ISiM students have the knowledge\, skill\, and duty to protect our country’s various vanishing regional histories\, oral traditions\, and cultural identity. \nHe also noted a second challenge the country faces – that of numbers. Around 200 – 500 million Indian students will enter the learning stream in the next few decades\, and all will be thirsty for knowledge. ISiM students can find opportunity for impact by developing efficient ways to manage knowledge and instruction. \nHe admitted that the enormous scale of both challenges make it clear that the solutions have to be digital\, and extensive efforts to digitize content are needed to preserve information and allow wider accessibility. \nHe ended his talk on a cautionary note\, conveying to the students that “time does fly by\, and before you know it\, situations change\, technologies change\, expectations change” and that “burnout is a very real and ever-present danger”. However\, he stressed the importance keeping enthusiasm\, fresh perspectives\, and inspiration alive. He concluded with the poem “Ithaca” by Constantin Cavafy and wished ISiM students great success in their future. \nDr. H. A. Ranganath\, Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)\, Bangalore\, focused his speech on Autonomy and University governance in higher education. He encouraged University of Mysore to provide similar autonomous status\, as enjoyed by ISiM\, to other well equipped departments. He advised that once other qualified departments became autonomous\, they would be in a position to deliver curriculum that reflected current times and future needs of the country. Autonomy would also foster innovation in education required by a developing country. He advised that institutions have good infrastructure before enrolling students and have strong collaborations with other institutions in higher education. He emphasized that universities should have inter-disciplinary centers and promote research through a holistic approach. He reiterated that the changing dynamics of the country’s higher education needs required a new paradigm for the higher education systems. \nAwards\nThe dignitaries presented certificates to the 34 graduates of 2011 from ISiM\, who had completed the two-year full-time M. Tech program in Information Systems & Management from University of Mysore. Mr. V. S. Raghav was awarded\, the “Parvathamma Subbaraya Gold Medal” instituted by ISiM for the top scorer\, at this 92nd annual convocation of University of Mysore. \nPresidential Remarks\nHonorable Vice-Chancellor of University of Mysore\, Dr. V. G. Talwar\, thanked all the dignitaries for their presence\, their comments and advice. He congratulated the graduating students and wished them success. He wished ISiM’s continued success and hoped to see further activity in promising new areas on campus and bring prominence to University of Mysore. \nConcluding Remarks\nProf. Shalini Urs congratulated the new M. Tech degree holders and wished them the very best in their careers and their future.\nThe 2011 batch is the 4th batch to graduate ISiM\, and will soon bravely venture out into the domain of the Big Data phenomenon created by the increasingly inter-networked world of digital devices. The amount of information that needs to be stored\, organized\, and managed is exponentially increasing – seemingly without limits – and ISiM students will be the brave pioneers in the field of Information Organization and Information Management. As they progress in their careers\, they will create the new profession of Information Management as a category of its own in the IT world – and leave their mark on society. \n \nDignitaries with M.Tech Graduates 2012

His work in GE on consumer finance has earned him a Super Achiever Award. \nIn addition\, he has enabled technology and published in the areas of default prediction from bond market analytics and decision support based on incomplete data. Currently\, he works on data-driven financial risk management as it applies to sectors like energy and water. \nIn the first session with the students\, Dr. Sarkar laid the foundation concepts for economics in the areas of microeconomics. Using examples from the auto industry\, he illustrated key parameters of microeconomics such as Demand and Supply\, Marginal Cost and Marginal Revenue\, Pricing\, Producer and Consumer Behavior\, and Market Competition. All the while emphasizing the role played by information in microeconomic dynamics. \nDuring the second session\, he took the discussion to the pure role played by information in decision making by principal-agent interactions. He talked about salient issues that occur in infonomics in the guise of signaling\, screening\, incentives\, and winner’s curse that explain microeconomic and macroeconomic behavior in everyday life. Using simple examples such as insurance policies\, farm owners and their workers\, and businesses and their contract labor\, he explained the weight that information played in making choices and decisions. He also covered the application of game theory to the same examples to predict possible outcomes in choice making to achieve economic equilibrium. Asymmetry of information cases were also discussed in detail. \nThe sessions were concluded with an explanation of how decision trees could be applied to analyze bargaining between customers and sellers\, and information exchanges that take place before a transaction is accomplished. \nThe students were appreciative of learning abstract concepts of economics co-related to real world activity\, to grasp the evolving area of Infonomics driven by advanced IT. Dr. Sarkar\, with his casual conversational style engaged the students\, and took a complex topic and made it easy to understand.

SUMMARY:Information Economics Workshop by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore. 19th and 20th March\, 2012
DESCRIPTION:International School of information Management (ISiM) is organising a Workshop on “Information Economics” by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar\, Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore\, on 19th and 20th March\, 2012 @ International School of information Management (ISiM)\, Manasagangotri\, Mysore. \nAbstract:\nInformation economics is a field that studies how information affects an economy and economic decisions. The special characteristics of information (as compared with other types of goods) complicate many standard economic theories. \nIn recent decades\, there have been influential advances in the study of information asymmetries and their implications for contract theory\, including market failure as a possibility. Experimental and game theory methods have been developed to model and test theories of information economics\, including potential public-policy applications such as mechanism design to elicit information-sharing and otherwise welfare-enhancing behavior. \nThis Workshop on Information economics–the study of situations in which different economic agents have access to different information\, introduces the participants to the effect of asymmetric information on the efficiency properties of market outcomes and the kind of institutions and patterns of behavior that develop in response to informational asymmetries. The Workshop covers topics such as: Asymmetric Information; Game theoretic Approaches; and Auctions. The focus is on game theoretical tools required for analyzing situations of asymmetric information and applications in risk sharing\, moral hazard\, adverse selection (signaling\, screening)\, and mechanism design. The workshop will introduce students to applications of the theory-applied fields in economics such as auctions\, finance\, environmental economics\, etc. \nSpeaker Bio:\n \nDr.Abhinanda Sarkar is currently Principal Scientist\, Software Sciences and Analytics\, in GE Global Research and is based in the GE John F Welch Technology Center in Bangalore. In this role\, Abhinanda works with GE research and engineering teams as they design software and solutions built around data mining\, modeling\, and optimization. He is also Manager of the Edison Engineering Development Program for high-potential engineering talent. Earlier in GE\, Abhinanda has served as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has led and contributed to services technologies for GE Energy and GE Capital focused mostly on risk management and reliability. In a research career with GE\, IBM\, and MIT\, Abhinanda’s publications and patents have been in applying statistical and probabilistic methods to areas such as wind energy forecasting\, bond market analytics\, biomedical text mining\, content-based image retrieval\, wireless network interference\, gravitational wave detection\, etc. \nDr.Sarkar received his B. SUMMARY:Special Lecture (19) “Second level gatekeeping and Content Concentration in Twitter: An Analysis of the 2009 Gaza Conflict”
DESCRIPTION:International School of information Management (ISiM) organised a Special Lecture (19) on “Second level gatekeeping and Content Concentration in Twitter: An Analysis of the 2009 Gaza Conflict” on 16th January\, 2012 at 11:00 am by Prof. H. Raghav Rao\, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor\, Management Science and Systems Department\, University at Buffalo\, State University of New York\, USA. \nBrief Report of Special Lecture:\nThis special lecture by Prof. H. Raghav Rao focused on how Twitter users not only consumed news worthy information\, but behaved as broadcasters of the information to other users at the same time. The rise of social media allows the online public to actively participate in processes of online news creation and circulation. Social media-based user-to-user communication not as a consequence of the reception of news\, but as an additional step in the news production chain. \nThe lecture highlighted what distinguished Twitter from traditional news media filtration\, wherein the consumer did not have a role\, to where the receiver played a critical role as ‘gatekeeper’ in social-media networks and impacted news distribution. User’s information selection is not merely a passive consumption of information: accompanies the practices of “sharing\,” redistributing the information they choose. Twitter Users act as Redistributors thus they are both audiences and broadcasters. \nProf. Rao’s research and analysis presented how rise of social-media has encouraged public to actively participate in online news creation and also perform additional steps in news production chain. Such research help u the role of social media users (i.e. Twitter) in a news gatekeeping process and also study global diffusion of breakout news in social media (i.e. Twitter). \nHe also demonstrated how ‘second-level ‘gate-keeping occurs by users of Twitter from examples of analysis of the “2009 Gaza Conflict” using statistical hypothesis testing\, and how it follows exponential decay law with time. He discussed in his lecture in detail about the temporal nature of news broadcast via Twitter as it concerns news worthy events that have limited life span. He concluded the lecture with lessons learned from research about current social-media capabilities and their limitations in being news broadcasters to the global community at large. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf.Raghav Rao at the lecture

SUMMARY:Special Lecture (19) : Second level gatekeeping and Content Concentration in Twitter: An Analysis of the 2009 Gaza Conflict By Prof. H. Raghav Rao SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Management Science and Systems Department\, University at Buffalo\,State University of New York\, USA
DESCRIPTION:International School of information Management (ISiM) has organised a Special Lecture (19) on “Second level gatekeeping and Content Concentration in Twitter: An Analysis of the 2009 Gaza Conflict” by Prof. H. Raghav Rao\, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor\, Management Science and Systems Department\, University at Buffalo\, State University of New York\, USA\, on 16th January\, 2012 at 11:00 am @ International School of information Management (ISiM)\, Manasagangotri\, Mysore. \nTalk Abstract:\nTwitter is a social news site in which various types of information are re-circulated and reinterpreted by individual users. The talk will provide an overview of a research study conducted by Hazel Kwon\, Onook Oh\, Manish Agrawal and H. R. Rao. The research study explores the pattern of Twitter users’ selection of news contents\, defining their practice as the ‘second-level’ gatekeeping. By analyzing user-selected contents in Twitter about the 2009 Israel-Gaza conflict\, the study finds: first\, while a variety of contents were selected and redistributed by Twitter users\, the aggregation of these selections over-represents a small number of prominent content providers; second\, Twitter users’ selection is not constituted randomly\, affected by hyperlinks structure and content types; third\, temporal analyses revealed that social media sites and traditional media are prominently selected in a later stage of news lifespan. \nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. H. Raghav Rao is SUNY Distinguished Service Professor\, Management Science and Systems Department\, at the University at Buffalo\, State University of New York\, USA. Prof. Rao got his PhD from Purdue University\, MBA from Faculty of Management Sciences\, Delhi University\, and B Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Kanpur. \nProfessor Rao’s interests are in the areas of management information systems\, decision support systems\, e-business\, emergency response management systems and information assurance. He has chaired sessions at international conferences and presented numerous papers. He also has co-edited four books of which one is on Information Assurance in Financial Services. He has authored or co-authored more than 175 technical papers\, of which more than 100 are published in archival journals. His work has received best paper and best paper runner up awards at AMCIS and ICIS. SUMMARY:Special Lecture (18) Industrial Internet by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar\, Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore.
DESCRIPTION:International School of information Management (ISiM) organised a Special Lecture (18) on “Industrial Internet” by Dr.Abhinanda Sarkar\, Principal Scientist\, Software & Analytics\, GE John F Welch Technology Centre\, Bangalore\, on 15th December\, 2011 at 11:00 am @ International School of information Management (ISiM)\, Manasagangotri\, Mysore. \nBrief Report:\nDr.Abhinanda Sarkar addressing students at International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, in the course of his Special Lecture on “Industrial Internet” said connecting communication devices and other gadgets that are used for domestic and manufacturing purposes\, would bring in revolutionary changes is the way things have been working so far. He said connecting the service industry\, advertising\, supply chain\, internet and almost all industries on a single platform can be beneficial to consumers as well as serve business interests. He talked about how a service engineer for your washing machine company could show up at your door step and say “Your washing machine called me up” and I am here to service. This would enhance safety and improve efficiency.\nDrawing an analogy\, Dr.Sarkar said industrial internet is Facebook for jet engines\, real-time status updates that help aircraft technicians maintain the log chart with more precision\, thus delivering better service to passengers ensuring care traffic control\, which reduces waiting times and fastens passenger movement a lot than before. Today it is possible to get real time flight data including the condition of the different components of the aeroplane to monitor the flight details and help diagnose problems if any.\nHis talk was full of examples from diverse domains including Health care\, vehicular traffic management & safety and others. \nWhile the Internet in the last 20 years has connected the entire world by connecting the communication devices such as the computers\, mobiles and others\, the Industrial Internet is about the next stage of Internet. The Industrial Internet is all about connecting millions of the machines that help to move\, cure\, power and build the world we live in. The Industrial Internet is Facebook for jet engines: real-time status updates that help aircraft technician’s do maintenance more efficiently\, which keeps passengers on the move. Its “care traffic control:” algorithms that smooth operations in ERs so patient wait times are shorter. And its rail Movement Planner: software that crunches data from locomotives on the move to increase average network speed by 2 to 4 miles per hour\, which saves approximately $200 million in capital and expenses per year. The Industrial Internet is all of these innovative solutions and so many more\, saving customers money and connecting our world. GE’s software engineers are working on developing and more from a B to B perspective\, on “Industrial Internet” to make our lives much better by connecting various machines that are part of our daily lives. Stat and M. Stat degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and his PhD in Statistics (with a minor in Economics) from Stanford University\, USA. He taught Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, USA\, for several years while pursuing research interests in time-frequency methods in stock prices and mutual fund ranking dynamics. He has also been visiting faculty at Stanford and ISI. While at IBM Research\, he received invention achievement awards for his work on pricing of e-commerce services.

SUMMARY:Special Lecture (17) Individual Differences in Phishing Susceptibility: An Integrated Information Processing Model by Dr. Arun Vishwanath\, Director of Graduate Studies\, Associate Professor\, Department of Communication\, Adjunct Associate Professor\, Management Science & Systems\, State University of New York at Buffalo\, USA.
DESCRIPTION:Special Lecture Abstract:\nDr. Arun Vishwanath besides explaining the nuances of Phishing also presented an integrated information processing model related to phishing susceptibility. In the light of his extensive research work on the topic\, he helped the audience understand the different methods\, approaches that can be used to mitigate the damage phishing can cause. Based on his research he presented an integrated information processing model of phishing susceptibility grounded in prior research in information processing and interpersonal deception. The model is refined and validated on a sample of intended victims of an actual phishing attack. The data provides strong support for the model’s theoretical structure and causative sequence\, explaining close to fifty percent of the variance in individual phishing susceptibility. The results indicate that most phishing emails are peripherally processed and individuals make decisions based on simple cues embedded in the email. Interestingly\, urgency cues in the email stimulated increased information processing thereby short circuiting the resources available for attending to other cues that could potentially help detect the deception. \nThe findings of the phishing study suggest that habitual patterns of media use combined with high levels of email load have a strong and significant influence on individuals’ likelihood to be phished. Consistent with social cognitive theory\, computer self-efficacy was found to significantly influence elaboration\, but its influence was mitigated by domain specific-knowledge. The presentation covers the model\, its tests\, the findings of the study\, as well as the ways in which individuals can reduce their susceptibility to phishing based deception. \nHaving given an overview of the study carried out in the US context\, he also asked the participating students to leverage and extend similar study in the Indian context. \nSpeaker Profile:\nArun Vishwanath\, Ph.D.\, MBA\, is Associate Professor of Communication and the Director of the Graduate Program at the University at Buffalo. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Management Science & Systems. His research focuses on cognitive\, affective\, and behavioural consequences of information on technology adopting units ranging from individual consumers and households to cultures and health care organizations. His research takes a systems theoretic approach and focuses on the dynamic\, embedded nature of decision-making within interdependent system domains and the role of information in shaping the present and future states of such systems.

SUMMARY:Special Lecture (16) : User Experience Design for Enterprise Software By Dr. Todd Barlow Director of Usability and User Interface Design\, USA
DESCRIPTION:The talk on “User Experience Design for enterprise software By Dr. Todd Barlow of SAS began with an welcome and introduction note by Prof. Shalini Urs\, Executive Director of the International School of Information Management ( ISiM)\, University of Mysore. There was very good response with many professionals from Infosys and other industries also participating in addition to the students of ISIM and the campus. \nDr. Barlow with his more than 2 decades of expertise in Interface design began his talk by focusing on the challenges and complexity of design issues in our every day devices such as faucets to Mobile phones. Starting from giving a all encompassing definition of UI (User Interface) Design\, he went about elaborating on the relevance of US across the different functions of a company from Sales to customer support services. Given that the criterion of success for Enterprise Software is sales\, and is sold to very large organizations\, and the purchase decisions are made by a higher level decision maker in the company and the feedback is from the end user\, it is a tough challenge to meet all expectations. Most UI Technologies such as Flex\, WPF\, JSF\, JQuery\, iOS are missing in functionality necessary for Enterprise Software\, every enterprise software company needs a UI team in the development process. In his talk Dr. Barlow highlighted the fact that UI team is invariably a very multidisciplinary one with people from computer science to psychology being part of the team.\nThe talk highlighted on the issues of deployment of field personnel as proxies in the usability evaluation and the role of usability experts and domain experts in carrying out usability evaluation. Drawing examples of case studies of Usability inspection of mobile application for : Medical personnel in a hospital ; Parking officers ; Political advisors and others\, the challenges of managing diverse applications and different expectations \, Dr. Barlow engaged the audience in thinking about usability. He also showcased many examples of intentionally bad UI designs such as in case of “Craigslist” and “Ryanair”. The talk also covered the area of diagrammatically opposite reviews of the same product and gave excerpts of the reviews for UI of Microsoft Mobile Phones. \nDr. Barlow also talked about the kinds of problems his UI team at SAS chooses to solve for their customers. They involve complex analytics\, large amounts of data\, large numbers of users\, or some combination of those three and about how usability fits into product development that follows the pattern of the S curve where in the number of users increase with time\, and with more users how they have to be more concerned with the quality of the user experience. The majority of these users are less interested in how something works. They will trust SAS software to deliver valid\, useful information and they simply want the software to work with as little fuss as possible. Dr. Barlow concluded by summarizing how presentation is the key and successful presentation layer has to be Aesthetically pleasing; Appropriate for the Audience for enterprise software\, the Technology\, and the Brand; should be Functional including legibility and accessibility .With the emergence of Software as Service (SAAS) paradigm and the agile approach to software design becoming well accepted\, and games and mobiles becoming the most popular. UI design field has some new challenges to confront. \nSpeaker Profile:\nTodd Barlow is Director of Usability and User Interface Design at SAS. He is responsible for the usability of SAS software\, establishing usability engineering practices\, and defining the role of usability in development processes. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in human-computer interaction. Prior to working at SAS\, he worked as a consultant designing and evaluating interfaces for consumer electronics\, weapon systems\, and telecommunication software. He holds a B.S.I.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology\, a B.A. from the University of Maryland\, an M.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, and a Ph.D. in psychology from North Carolina State University.

SUMMARY:First Graduation Day Celebrations @ ISiM
DESCRIPTION:The International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore\, celebrated its first “Graduation Day”\, on Monday\, the 11th of April\, 2011. \nExecutive Director of ISiM\, Prof. Shalini R. Urs\, welcomed the gathering\, and rightfully pointed out that Graduation Day represents a transformation in the lives of the graduates\, who now step into much greater responsibilities in life. \nDr. P. Anandan\, Managing Director\, Microsoft Research India\, Bangalore\, was the commencement speaker. In his speech\, he highlighted the various kinds of transformation that we\, Indians\, have seen over the ages\, and that the only reason why we keep innovating\, is that we don’t stop aspiring. He stressed upon the fact that we should always aspire to greater heights\, and work hard towards achieving them. His main advice to the graduates was that aspirations should be the driving force in their lives\, and that they should not be limited by success. \nAlso speaking on the occasion was the Chief Guest for the ceremony\, Shri M. N. Vidyashankar\, Principal Secretary\, e-Governance\, IT\, BT and ST\, Government of Karnataka\, who rightfully said that constant innovation is the only way for organizations to sustain in the current global scenario. He also said that one of the main hurdles in the path of constant innovation was the non-acceptance of technology by members of the general public. Shri Vidyashankar highlighted an example each for the success of using technology at their department and for the failure of an innovative education system due to the non-acceptance of technology. He also threw light on the fact that though Indians have significantly contributed to the research and innovation successes at Silicon Valley (California)\, they have not played such a major role in research activities in India\, and advised the students to work towards a career of innovation. \nVice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore\, Prof. V. G. Talawar\, also addressed the gathering\, and supported the remarks made by the other dignitaries\, and advised the graduates and the students present to choose a path of wisdom and innovation. \nThe dignitaries distributed the degree certificates to the graduates. SUMMARY:Special Lecture (14) on: Open Video Project : Research and Practice By Mr. Gary Marchionini\, PhD School of Information and Library Science Chapel Hill\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gary Marchionini is Dean and Cary C. Boshamer Professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina where he serves as Dean of the school. He formerly taught courses in human-information interaction\, interface design and testing\, and digital libraries. He heads the Interaction Design Laboratory at SILS. His research areas include Information interaction\, human-computer interaction\, human-centred computing\, information retrieval\, digital libraries\, information architecture\, digital government\, cyberspace identity\, information policy. \nHe delivered a lecture at the International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore\, Mysore\, about the Open Video Project\, whose purpose is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video\, multimedia retrieval\, digital library\, and other research communities. Prof. Gary Marchionini described digital video as “crafted expression”\, which has certain emotional characteristics associated with it when a person records it. He highlighted the fact that the main objective of this project was to make the files available\, and not streams. The reason for this was that files can be reused\, where as streams can’t. However\, he also mentioned about certain tools that were in the recent times available\, which allowed the conversion of a video stream into a file that can be downloaded. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems\, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation\, summarization\, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. The availability of a common “open” video repository across the world for researchers means that it will serve as a test collection that enables systems to be compared\, in a manner similar to standard corpuses for text retrieval. \nThe Open Video Project is sponsored by and developed at the Interaction design laboratory at the School of Information and Library Sciences\, University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill. Prof. Gary Marchionini is the supervisor of the project. This project began in 1998\, with development of a basic framework and digitization of video content\, which were contributed by some organizations such as NASA and by other universities such as Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The first phase of the project was mainly about coding the video files with Metadata\, and making them available online for the researchers. \nMore information about the project can be obtained at: http://www.open-video.org/ \nProf. Shalini R. Urs\, the Executive Director of ISiM\, welcomed the gathering and also delivered the vote of thanks.

SUMMARY:ISiM 5th Anniversary Celebrations Special Lecture (11) by Dr. Edward Cutrell\, Researcher - Manager\, Microsoft Research India\, Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time : 15th September 2010\, 3:30pm onwards. \nTopic : Computing for Socio-Economic Development at Microsoft Research India \nVenue : International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore. \nSpecial Lecture Abstract\nAs part of its 5th Anniversary celebrations\, the International School of Information Management (ISiM)\, University of Mysore is organizing a Special Lecture on “Computing for Socio-Economic Development at Microsoft Research India “. \nDr. Edward Cutrell\, who is the Researcher Manager of the “Technology for Emerging Markets Group” at Microsoft Research India\, Bangalore\, will be delivering the lecture. \nThe Technology for Emerging Markets (TEM) group at Microsoft Research (MSR) India addresses the needs and aspirations of people in the world’s developing communities. Their research targets people who are increasingly consuming computing technologies and services\, as well as those for whom access to computing remains largely out of reach. \nTEM is a multidisciplinary group engaged in a range of technical and social-science research\, working in the areas of ethnography\, sociology\, political science\, economics\, and psychology. This has enabled TEM to understand the social context of technology and how it relates to individual users. TEM also does technical research in hardware and software to devise solutions that are designed for emerging and underserved markets in rural and urban environments. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Cutrell will give an overview of the TEM group and highlights two projects his team has been involved with — one\, which is a study seeking to understand how information technologies are used by very low income residents of urban slums\, and another\, which attempts to provide Wikipedia and other digital content offline using DVDs.
